Station Manager Farewell

May 8th, 2013 by krfhnews

Dear DJays, Listeners, Sponsors, and the Like Another semester has come and gone, and man has it been a busy one here at KRFH.net! With so much going on I am excited to share with you the highlights of spring 2013. We have continued our outreach to the community by promoting ourselves with such events like Elixxr and Lixxapalooza, which featured very talented artists, both local and national. We have created culture through bonding experiences, such as the KRFH camping trip, and our first annual KRFH awards banquet at Masaki’s, where DJay’s won prizes for being themselves….awesome. Though semester is… [Read More]

A Look Straight into Hell By Nicole Hostetter Have you ever turned on the radio and heard a song you loved as a child, after years of not even thinking about it, to find that it has a whole world of meaning that you never dreamt of? This kind of thing happens to us all at one point in time or another. The most recent occurrence of this phenomenon for me was a few days ago when I turned on my car radio and heard The Clash’s “Straight to Hell”. Before then, whenever I had heard this song, all I… [Read More]

A San Diego native, Vega is an avid Redittor and showcases each show with a different incarnation of the venerable Space Jam theme. DJ Profile: Soulfro

May 5th, 2013 by krfhnews

Dowlan Leckliter, perhaps better known as DJ Soulfro, has led at the helm of his show, The Nerdcave, for years. A KRFH veteran, his show is characterized by its liberal use of musical genres, including blues, alternative, underground and much more, coupled with interesting news from the far-flung depths of the nerd world. It’s certainly fair to say that you’ll never know what to expect on his show. Hailing from Fortuna, California, Leckliter came to HSU for the music program, joined KRFH to supplement that love only to find himself now very much interested in a career in radio. Leckliter… [Read More]

The Beer Report, Wednesday’s at 7pm Connor Jepson and Dillion Casey, who are better known as The Hennessy Cowboy and Dil-Drunk, have a one of a kind show on KRFH. Wednesdays at 7pm are focused a little bit more on booze then music. Every week on “The Beer Report” these guys choose one beer that they test and do research on; they then report their findings on the air, there might be facts on the brewery history, style of beer, and a description of taste. They even have a special segment called “I remember my first beer” that the Hennessy… [Read More]

Nikkay Slikk, Thursday’s at noon When most people are asked to describe their personality through an animal, their responses are often predictable and boring, “A lion because I’m brave,” “A hermit crab because I’m shy and withdrawn,” but then there are people like Nikki Leskinen. Nikki Leskinen, better known as Dj Nikkay Slikk, says an insolent badger best fits her, “I like to chill and kick it in the cave, but I’m also wild.” She made her insolent badger connection one day when kicking back with friends and realized it would be the perfect name for her weekly KRFH radio… [Read More]

DJ Burtwurst, Tuesday’s at noon DJ Burtwurst is new to Humboldt County and fresh to the KRFH airwaves. Better known as Brittany Gautier, she says her DJ name was dubbed from a nickname fellow KRFHer gave her. She says she’s drawn to radio because of its ability to bring people together and expand boundaries. Her radio show, The Braless Hour, stays true to her interest in culture — each one of her shows is differently themed. Punk rock or hip hop day, Brittany channels her inner feminist by showcasing music written and performed by women. She arrived here last fall… [Read More]

Business of the Month

Lets talk about food. Fritanga Nica Tamales is something unique to Arcata. Hiding amongst the subtext of Alba Lopez’s menu, in a place somewhere between the sacred unfurling of the banana leaf tamale wrapping and the resulting puff of heavenly steam that fills your nasal cavities with pure corn masa delight, you’ll find ingredients so wholesome, so sincere, that you just might melt. You can find them in her pupusas, too. Inside a thick, hand made tortilla stuffed with meat, potatoes and cheese, is a little bit of Nicaraguan sunshine capable of bringing a calm to any storm. Be it… [Read More]

Diggin’ Dirt coming to Local Lixx in March

March 3rd, 2013 by krfhnews

This band is relatively new to Humboldt County as they sprung up from the ground sometime last spring with a distinct sound. Bending the limitations of genres they have managed to stand out amongst the other bands in the area and bring something to the table. Their musicianship is a whole different story as many of them are in the music department here at HSU, and are devoted to their instruments. You may have heard them at a couple parties holding it down or at various venues across town as they know how to make people dance, and if that’s… [Read More]
