Dear DJays, Listeners, Sponsors, and the Like Another semester has come and gone, and man has it been a busy one here at KRFH.net! With so much going on I am excited to share with you the highlights of spring 2013. We have continued our outreach to the community by promoting ourselves with such events like Elixxr and Lixxapalooza, which featured very talented artists, both local and national. Karel Vega, known on his show as DJ K-Real, has been a mainstay on the air at KRFH for years. His show, Space Jamz showcases a myriad of musical genres, ranging from bossa nova to soul and just about everything in between. A San Diego native, Vega is an avid Redittor and showcases each show with a different incarnation of the venerable Space Jam theme. Although his program has maintained this unique trademark, it has expanded from an exclusively psychedelic playlist to include to a wide-range of genres to cater to an ever-growing audience. DJ Cha Chi, aka Carson Welt hosts “The Green Booth” on Wednesdays from ten to midnight. Sometimes he is accompanied by Bean, they try to keep their beats “fresh and green”; the show is mainly based around a wide variety of music, anything from “funk to folk”. He mentioned sometimes he even plays segments of stand up comedians. Originally from the East Bay’s Castro Valley, Carson came up to Humboldt for the redwood forest. Dowlan Leckliter, perhaps better known as DJ Soulfro, has led at the helm of his show, The Nerdcave, for years. A KRFH veteran, his show is characterized by its liberal use of musical genres, including blues, alternative, underground and much more, coupled with interesting news from the far-flung depths of the nerd world. It’s certainly fair to say that you’ll never know what to expect on his show. The Beer Report, Wednesday’s at 7pm Connor Jepson and Dillion Casey, who are better known as The Hennessy Cowboy and Dil-Drunk, have a one of a kind show on KRFH. Wednesdays at 7pm are focused a little bit more on booze then music. Every week on “The Beer Report” these guys choose one beer that they test and do research on; they then report their findings on the air, there might be facts on the brewery history, style of beer, and a description of taste. DJ Burtwurst, Tuesday’s at noon DJ Burtwurst is new to Humboldt County and fresh to the KRFH airwaves. Better known as Brittany Gautier, she says her DJ name was dubbed from a nickname fellow KRFHer gave her. She says she’s drawn to radio because of its ability to bring people together and expand boundaries. Her radio show, The Braless Hour, stays true to her interest in culture — each one of her shows is differently themed. Lets talk about food. Fritanga Nica Tamales is something unique to Arcata. Hiding amongst the subtext of Alba Lopez’s menu, in a place somewhere between the sacred unfurling of the banana leaf tamale wrapping and the resulting puff of heavenly steam that fills your nasal cavities with pure corn masa delight, you’ll find ingredients so wholesome, so sincere, that you just might melt. This band is relatively new to Humboldt County as they sprung up from the ground sometime last spring with a distinct sound.
